Obituary for Dennis W. Smith

Graveside service for Dennis W. Smith, 75, Hutchinson, Kansas, will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 19, 2016 at the Celestial Gardens in Cyril. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fletcher Funeral Home. Mr. Smith passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2016, in Hutchinson, Kansas. Dennis W. Smith was born December 19, 1940, in rural Caddo County, Oklahoma to Wayne and Lottie (Brown) Smith. He was a retired Motor Fuel Broker having been involved in various stages of the industry dating back to his teenage years. While he was in high school he worked at a truck stop fueling station in his hometown of Cyril. After high school and some college years, he worked at Phillips 66 facilities in Amarillo, TX and Albuquerque, NM. Returning to Cyril, he worked at the APCO Bulk Plant as transport loader and then invoicing clerk and night manager. He then transferred to APCO�s Southern Division, Chickasha Field Office in sales and accounting. He then accepted another transfer to Hutchinson, KS as APCO area office manager for the state of Kansas exclusive of the Kansas City Metro. Upon the liquidation of APCO Oil Corp. in 1979, he became part owner of Mid-West Petroleum, Inc., a motor fuel distributorship and Stop-2-Shop convenience store chain, retiring in 1990. In 1992, he and his wife founded Prairie Fuels, Inc., a motor fuel brokerage firm, and he retired again in 2012. He was married to Diana Kay (O�Donley) Smith, from Anadarko. He is survived by his wife, Diana, of the home; daughter, Vicki Lynn Shrum and her husband Bill of Jackson, WY; son, Phillip Wayne Smith and his wife Stacy (Colborne) of Scottsdale, AZ; granddaughter, Jennen (Shrum) Morris and her husband Cable of Gilvert, AZ; grandson, Tyler Shrum of Wilson, WY; granddaughters: Kendall Smith and Kamryn Smith of Scottsdale, AZ; great grandsons: Bridger Morris and Vander Morris of Gilvert, AZ; brother and best friend, Danny Smith and his wife Regina (Schneberger) of Cyril; sister in-law, Dora (O�Donley) Smith of Minco; favorite aunt, Geneva (Brown) Harris of Cement; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Two nieces: Stacy Smith with daughter Logan, and Kari Smith and her husband David Biggs with son Jack held a very special place in his heart. He is preceded in death by his parents: Wayne and Lottie Smith.
