Obituary for Nolen L. Young

Funeral service for Retired Maj. Nolen �Buddy� Young, 81, of Geronimo, Oklahoma, will be at 10:00am Friday, February 3, 2017, at Hulen United Methodist Church followed by burial with full military honors and Masonic funeral rites at Letitia Cemetery under the direction of Fletcher Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Thursday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Retired Maj. Young passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 east of Geronimo, Oklahoma in an auto accident. Nolen Lloyd Young was born on November 23, 1935 in Lisbon, Louisiana to Mai Ruth Lowrey and Reginald Young. He graduated from Lisbon High School, and then enlisted in the US Army. Nolen married Ursula Furboter on May 23, 1964 in Germany. During a military career that spanned 32 years, Nolen�s service included 2 tours in Vietnam, where he earned a Purple Heart and learned to speak Vietnamese. He was fluent in 5 languages. He was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Three Service Stars, Bronze Star Medal, Two Overseas Service Bars, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Staff Service Medal First Class, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, Army Commendation Medal, Expert (rifle M-14), Expert (Pistol .19), and Meritorious Service Medal. After retirement, Nolen worked as a food service manager on Fort Sill, a consultant in the food service industry, and served as President and Treasurer for the Hulen Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, telling jokes, playing dominos, camping at Lake Waurika, and spending time with family and friends. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 51 years, Ursula Young, of the home; 2 brothers and 2 sisters: Allen and Steve Young, Geri Aycock and Sue Jones all of Ruston, Louisiana; 6 sons: Uwe Peter and Alaine Kalk of Hillsboro, Oregon, Bernd �Sonny� and Unsuk Behneke of Lawton, Nelson and Cindy Young of Comanche, Mike and Cindy Young of Cement, David and Lora Young of Lawton, and Wayne and Jenny Young of Morrison; 1 daughter: Ilona Behneke and Brian Allen of Tyler, Texas; 18 grandchildren: Logan and Mason Kalk, Jared and Jordyn Young, Haley Young Nunez Morales, Colten, Waylen and Jayce Young, Steve and Abraham Farris, Kristy Chaney, Jenny Montgomery, Morgan, McKinzie, JD, Paige, and Maddison Martinez, and Malie Young; 4 great-grandchildren: Payton and Jackson Young, Serina and Riley Young, and 1 on the way; several nieces and nephews; HVFD family, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reginald and Mai Ruth Young; brother, Dr. Sid Young; mother-in-law: Greta Furboter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the St. Jude�s Children�s Hospital and/or the Hulen Volunteer Fire Department.
