Obituary for Vel Dean Henery

Vel Dean “Dutch” Henery, age 85 of Cyril, OK passed away peacefully on October 5, 2018, after a long battle with Alzheimer Disease, at Cedar Crest Nursing Home, where he resided for three short months. Funeral Service will be held 10:00 am Monday, October 8, 2018 at the First Baptist Church of Cyril with Pastor Donnie Crittendon and Donnie Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Celestial Gardens Cemetery of Cyril under the direction of the Fletcher Funeral home. Visitation will be held Sunday from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Vel was born in Alva, OK on June 21, 1933 to Bud and Velma Taliferro. He was later adopted at the age of 2 by Edward and Elizabeth Henery, who he lovingly referred to as “Ma and Pa Henery”. Vel Dean graduated from Cyril High School, attended college at Cameron University in Lawton and served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers Operations and Maintenance Division for a short time before receiving an Honorable Discharge to return home to care for his family. Vel Dean married Peggy Stanley on February 19, 1955 at the First Baptist Church in Cyril. They had three beautiful daughters, Connie Lutonsky, Jann Wilson, and Christy Johnson all of Cyril. At 23 years of age, Vel Dean began a lifelong career in the oil and gas business. In 1956 he began working for APCO Oil Corporation in Cyril where he worked for 28 years. His ambitions then took him to the Amber Refinery in Ft. Worth, TX and then to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, each for approximately one year. After Saudi Arabia, he returned home and worked tirelessly to reopen a portion of the Cyril Refinery, known as Cyril Petrochemical Corporation. He operated Cyril Petrochemical Corporation for approximately 10 years. During this time his grandchildren made many wonderful memories riding their bicycles to “the refinery” to visit Grandpa, play with his office supplies, joy ride on the golf cart, and climb towers they surely weren’t supposed to be climbing. Vel Dean ended his oil and gas career as a consultant totaling over 39 years of dedicated, industry experience. Vel Dean was a lifelong member of the Cyril First Baptist Church where he faithfully served his Lord Jesus Christ in many wonderful ways to include teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, serving as Treasurer, greeting, mowing, unlocking the church early on Sunday mornings and getting the coffee started. He never met a stranger and enjoyed visiting his friends at the “coffee shop”. He loved his girls, their families and their friends. Vel Dean was kind, gentle and made everyone feel at home. He loved a hot fire and a good meal topped off with a bowl of homemade ice cream. He could always be counted on to lend a helping hand. He spent countless hours driving tractors, cutting wheat, hauling wheat and mowing yards. He served his Lord faithfully and touched so many lives. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and an incredibly fun grandpa. He will be dearly missed by so many people.

He is survived by, his wife Peggy Henery, of Cyril; 3 daughters: Connie Lutonsky and husband Mark, Jann Wilson, and Christy Johnson and husband Patrick Johnson, all of Cyril; 1 sister: Trudy Lancaster of Cherokee, OK; 6 grandchildren: Colleen Gallimore and husband Nathan of Elgin, Josh Wilson and wife Rhianon of Cashion, Amber Jilek and husband Jeff of Edmond, Luke Lutonsky and wife Taylor of Cyril, Zach Johnson of Cyril, and Sydney Johnson of Cyril; and 8 great grandchildren with 1 on the way: Jalynn, Faith and soon-to-be Charlotte Gallimore, Knox and Zoey Wilson, Hudson and Adalynn Jilek, and Tegan and Cash Lutonsky.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bud and Velma Taliferro, his adopted parents Edward and Elizabeth Henery; 1 brother, Lawrence Henery; and 2 sisters, Lucille Graffis and Leona Reardon.

The family gives special thanks to Aspire Hospice for their excellent support and care during these last few weeks. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.
