Obituary for Betty A. Gillian

Betty Alyce Gillian was born October 9, 1928, and left to be with the Lord on January 2, 2018.

Alyce grew up in Fletcher, Oklahoma.  Her parents, Claude and Pearl Ray, passed away early in her life and she was raised by her grandparents, John and Minnie Ray. On February 19, 1946, at the age of 17, she married Roy Gillian, a handsome young man just back from military service in World War II. They spent the early years of their marriage in Pauls Valley, before settling in Lawton, Oklahoma and adopting two little girls.

Alyce was a charter member of the Western Hills Christian Church of Lawton, Oklahoma. In 1961, she attended its very first worship service with her husband Roy and their two young daughters and became one of the four charter members that day. And so began her life of service in the church. She was always putting together wedding showers, baby showers, and church dinners, taught Sunday school, and with Roy, worked with the youth groups. She and Roy were at services every Sunday morning and Sunday night and at Wednesday night Bible study until their later years when declining health prevented them from attending.

Her grandsons agree that she made a mean cherry pie. Roy never left the house for work without a hot breakfast. Alyce whipped up big family meals and holiday spreads with no trouble and loved doing it. Her 5-Cup Salad and her cornbread are family favorites. She took pride in her home and welcomed friends and family for meals, parties, or just coffee and conversation.

Every Friday morning was a trip to the beauty shop to get her hair fixed and then lunch with the girls at the cafeteria. She grew flowers, planted a little pine tree from Arkansas in her back yard, and trekked to Iowa every other year to visit longtime friends. For many years she bowled in a league and proudly displayed her team's last place trophy. She stepped on and over her grandsons’ Lego pieces without complaint. Roy and Alyce’s October birthdays were a combined celebration and in the later years held much laughter because so many candles on the cake made a sizeable blaze. She loved to sew and embroider and called to Roy to adjust her sewing machine when it wouldn’t feed properly. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother and leaves behind a legacy of faith and determination, bravery and endurance, and two strong daughters to carry her memory.

Alyce is survived by her daughters, Betty Mekhimar and her husband Wael, and Donna McKinzie and her husband Lawrence, her grandsons Gary Byrns, Mark McKinzie and Aaron McKinzie, and cousins, nephews and nieces of the Gillian, Ray, and Walker families.

Alyce was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years and best friend Roy, her sister Lillian, her brother Charles, and her closest friends.

A private memorial service will be held with Dave Dunson officiating.  Burial will be at the Fletcher Cemetery under the direction of the Fletcher Funeral Home.
